Achievements in computational mechanics and computational intelligence since 1995:

  • Professor J. Orkisz is the author of Part III (p. 335-432) on Finite Difference Method in the Handbook of Computational Solid Mechanics: Survey and Comparison of Contemporary Methods , M. Kleiber (Ed.), Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 1998. Professor Z. Waszczyszyn wrote Chapter 7 in Part II (p. 253-333) on Stability Problems and Methods of Analysis of Nonlinear FEM Equations in the same book.
  • Since 1996 Professor Z. Waszczyszyna has been coordinating an inter-university colloquium on Applications of artificial neural networks and soft methods in civil engineering. The research group has been composed of about 30 participants from Cracow University of Technology and 6 other universities (in Zielona Góra, Technical in Rzeszów, Wrocław, Gliwice and Białystok, and Pedagogical in Cracow). The activity of the group resulted in many publications (including 3 monographs, about 20 review papers and over 40 contributed journal papers) and scientific career advancements (1 professor nomination, 3 habilitation (DSc) degrees, 8 doctoral degrees, many MSc titles). The success of the school can also be measured by 14 research grants from the Committee for Scientific Research and by awarding the so-called FNP Prize of the Foundation for Polish Science to Professor Z. Waszczyszyn in 2001. He was also the coordinator and lecturer within CISM Advanced School on Neural Networks in Mechanics of Structures and Materials, Udine, Italy in 1998, and also one of lecturers within CISM Advanced School on Parameter Identification of Materials and Structures, Udine, 2003.
  • On May 25, 2001 Professor Z. Waszczyszyn was granted the honoris causa doctorate of Budapest University of Technology and Economics for his achievements in research and international scientific cooperation. In years 1995-2007 Professor Z. Waszczyszyn has been the chairman of the Structural Mechanics Division (since 2004 called Division of Structural and Material Mechanics) of the Committee on Civil Engineering and Hydroengineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In 2000 he represented Division IV of PAS during the Polish Science Days in Helsinki, Finland. Moreover, in 2003 he delivered a series of lectures in Vienna on invitation by the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
  • Scientific and industrial cooperation of Division L-6 with Volpe National Transportation Systems Center, US Department of Transportation, Cambridge, USA. Research projects on the Development of Advanced Methods for Theoretical Prediction of Shakedown Stress States and Physically Based Enhancement of Experimental Data, contracted by the Volpe Center, have been carried out since 1995.
  • Development and testing of an original theoretical-numerical residual stress analysis method in elastic plastic bodies subject to cyclic loads and innovative application of this method to effectively analyze residual states in railroad rails and railroad vehicle wheels. Development and testing of original physically based approximation methods (global-local and global methods) and application of these +methods to analyze (smoothen) data measured in experimental mechanics (including experimental-numerical analysis of residual stresses in railroad rails and railroad vehicle wheels) and estimate a'posteriori errors in numerical solution of boundary problems (FEM, FDM).
  • Professors J. Orkisz and Z. Waszczyszyn organized many minisymposia within International Congresses (including WCCM V, Vienna 2002, MIT Conference on Computational Fluid and Solid Mechanics, Cambridge, MA 2003 and 2005, WCCM VI, Beijing 2004, 8th US National Congress on Computational Mechanics, Austin 2005, ECCM-2006, Lisbon 2006). Institute L-5 and Division L-6 were the main organizers of the Second European Conference on Computational Mechanics ECCM-2001, June 26-29, 2001, which gathered at CUT over 500 specialists in the field (Z. Waszczyszyn was the chairman of the congress and co-editor of the proceedings together with J. Pamin, the scientific secretary). On June 30 - July 02, 2005 Institute L-5 organized the International Symposium on Neural Networks and Soft Computing in Structural Engineering NNSC-2005, one of thematic conferences of ECCOMAS (European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences). Z. Waszczyszyn was the chairman and M. Słoński the secretary of the conference.
  • On April 28, 2000 President of Poland nominated Cz. Cichoń full professor of technical sciences. In 2000 Dr. J. Pamin was granted the first award of the Committe on Mechanics of the Polish Academy of Sciences for a set of works published by the age of 35. In 2003 he received the fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. In 2005 Prof. Z. Waszczyszyn and Dr. J. Pamin were granted individual awards of the Minister of National Education and Sport for outstanding scientific achievements. During the 7th World Congress on Computational Mechanics WCCM 2006 in Los Angeles Prof. Z. Waszczyszyn was distinguished by the International Association for Computational Mechanics with the title IACM Fellow.
